Prototype Technician (electrical engineering focus)

Role Description

This is a part-time, flexible role for an independently contracted Prototype Technician or Electrical Engineer located in the United States, suitable for a gifted student or early-career electrical engineer.

The Prototype Technician will be responsible for designing, assembling, prototyping, and troubleshooting PCB-based electroencephalography (EEG) devices. The technician will read and understand technical datasheets, work with hand tools, and will be involved in soldering components, conducting R&D to improve designs and processes, testing electronic circuits, developing custom firmware, and developing custom CAD parts for 3D printing or molding. In addition, the role includes detailed documentation of the prototyping process and results to inform future iterations.

Candidates are expected to demonstrate prior design and testing experience with highly sensitive wearable technology or medical devices.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency with Hand Tools and Soldering
  • Experience in Troubleshooting and Prototyping electronic circuits
  • Research and Development (R&D) capabilities
  • Experience in firmware development powering ADC and BLE ICs
  • Experience in CAD using KiCad
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation skills
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work with a high degree of autonomy while adhering to device specifications
  • Ability to effectively communicate R&D and design challenges, as well as to devise creative and collaborative solutions
  • Proficiency in English, both written and spoken, without the assistance of translation software or AI is beneficial
  • Graduate degree in Electrical Engineering, Cognitive Neuroscience, or related field is desirable
  • Deep knowledge of brain-computer interfaces, wearable technology, or electronic medical devices is necessary

Both US-based and non-US-based applicants will be considered for this role. Qualified candidates who hold J-1 visas and are interested in registering this position as Curricular Practical Training (CPT) at their host institution are welcome to apply.

The selection process will include an evaluation consisting of exercises that simulate real projects.
